Inguinal Hernia Repairs

Hernia surgery has changed dramatically over the last 10 years, with improved techniques to decrease the amount of postoperative pain and also to limit the recovery time. The surgery is done as a day-stay procedure, using a tension-free repair with mesh.

The open operation is done using IV sedation and local anesthesia and takes approximately one hour. Anti-inflammatory medication is used in the perioperative period, which reduces the amount of postoperative discomfort. Patients are usually fully recovered, resuming all normal activities at approximately two weeks.

The laparoscopic approach is more appropriate for some patients and this is also offered by Pioneer Valley Surgical Associates, P.C. This procedure is done as a day stay but the patients require general anesthesia. Full recovery is usually within two weeks and again postoperative pain is minimal. Our surgeons use state of the art equipment and techniques.
